History

Nesavanam emerged as an extension of the social ministry of Nesakkaram–SEEDS, dedicated to the upliftment of street children and the empowerment of women. Inspired by the Gospel mandate to care for the least and the marginalized, Friar Jesu Irudayam, the founder of Nesakkaram, envisioned a home where street children could discover dignity, care, and education, and grow into healthy human beings. Between 1995 and 2000, he purchased ten acres of agricultural land to implement welfare projects for street children, underprivileged boys, and women in and around Chennai and Thiruvallur Districts.

Guided by a vision that united social service with spiritual depth, Friar Jesu also conceived Nesavanam as an eco centre, a model farm, and a place of meditation. Over time, the campus developed into a space of fraternity and service, housing three key infrastructures: Nesabhavan, a hostel for boys; Nesa Irudayam, a training centre; and Nesaillam, the residence for friars. Each of these was built in a phased manner, reflecting both pastoral foresight and providential care.

The friary, Nesaillam, was solemnly blessed by Friar Babu Jose, OFM, Minister Provincial of the Province of St. Thomas the Apostle, India, on 28 September 2010. It was inaugurated by Mrs. Barbara Schmidt Eule of MZF (Missionszentrale), Germany, whose presence signified the wider communion of the Church in mission.
