Day 3 _ Novena to Francis
3rd Day –27th September
Hymn
My brothers, my sisters , come, listen to me,
My children, the voice of your father now hear,
Give ear and attend to my voice carefully,
You blessed of God and to me very dear.
O great are the things we have promised the lord,
But greater by far is our promised returned.
With promise of ours let our living accord,
For promise of god let us ardently yearn.
How brief is the pleasure of sin and of wrong,
But endless the punishment, endless the pain;
how slight is the suff’ring this life brings along
yet ageless the glory and joy that we gain.
The number of those that are called is so vast,
But those who respond and are chosen are few;
The Lord keeps account of the first and the last,
To each and to all he shall render their due,
Psalmody
Ant. 1 No one should become angry with a brother because of the fault of that brother, but with all patience and humility let him admonish him and support him. (II LF 44)
Psalm 34:1-11
I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips;
in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.
The humble shall hear and be glad.
Glorify the Lord with me.
Together let us praise his name.
I sought the Lord and he answered me;
from all my terrors he set me free.
Look towards him and be radiant;
let your faces not be abashed.
This poor man called; the Lord heard him
and rescued him from all his distress.
The angel of the Lord is encamped
around those who revere him, to rescue them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
He is happy who seeks refuge in him.
Revere the Lord, you his saints.
They lack nothing, those who revere him.
Strong lions suffer want and go hungry
but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.
Ant. 1 No one should become angry with a brother because of the fault of that brother, but with all patience and humility let him admonish him and support him.
Ant. 2 Let the brothers express the love which they have for one another by their deeds. (ER XI: 6)
Psalm 127
If the Lord does not build the house,
in vain do its builders labour;
if the Lord does not watch over the city,
in vain does the watchman keep vigil.
In vain is your earlier rising,
your going later to rest,
you who toil for the bread you eat:
when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber.
Truly sons are a gift from the Lord,
a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Indeed the sons of youth
are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.
O the happiness of the man
who has filled his quiver with these arrows!
He will have no cause for shame
when he disputes with his foes in the gateways.
Ant. 2 Let the brothers express the love which they have for one another by their deeds.
Ant. 3 Each one should love and care for his brother in all those things through which God will give him grace. He should love and care for as a mother loves and cares for her son. (ER IX. 11)
The Praises to Be Said at All the Hours (PrH 1-10)
Let your response be: And let us praise and exalt Him above all throughout the ages.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,
who is and who was and who is to come (cf Rev 4:8)
Worthy are Thee, Our Lord God,
to accept praise, glory and honour, and blessing (cf Rev 4:11)
Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain to accept virtue and riches
and wisdom and fortitude and honour and glory and blessing (Rev 5:12)
Let us bless the Father
and the Son with the Holy Spirit
All you works of the Lord
bless the Lord (Dan 3:57)
Recite praise to Our God all you His servants
and you who fear God, tiny and great (cf Rev 19:5)
Praise Him the Glorious One
you heavens and earth (cf Ps 68:35; Ps Rom)
And every creature, which is in Heaven and on the earth
and which is beneath the earth and the sea and those which are in it (cf Apoc 5:13)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be always and unto the ages of ages. Amen
Ant. 3 Each one should love and care for his brother in all those things through which God will give him grace. He should love and care for as a mother loves and cares for her son. (ER IX. 11)
Scripture Reading (Romans 12:5, 9-10, 16-18)
We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Responsory (ER VII: 15-16)
Leader: Wherever the brothers are and in whatever place they meet other brothers,
All: they must greet one another wholeheartedly and lovingly.
Leader: They must beware not to appear outwardly sad and like gloomy hypocrites; but let them show that they are joyful in the Lord and cheerful and truly gracious.
All: They must greet one another wholeheartedly and lovingly.
Leader: Glory be to the Father....
All: They must greet one another wholeheartedly and lovingly.
Magnificart Ant. Wherever the brothers may be together or meet other brothers, let them give witness that they are members of one family. (LR VI. 7)
Intercessions
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd who suffered the passion of the cross to save us, his sheep. (Adm VI.1) In communion with him as one brotherhood, we pray that we may be cleansed from all iniquities and become his true ambassadors in the world, saying:
Res: Sanctify us in truth and make us one, Lord. (ER XXII. 49, 53)
Jesus, your son has entrusted the care of the church to Saint Peter (Mt. 16:18)—may our communion with Francis our pope and Bernard our bishop ever strengthen the church as one body of Christ. (LR I.2)
Brotherhood is your gift to each of its members (Test 14)—inspire all the brothers of our Order together with ________, our Minister General, and _______, our Minister Provincial, to cherish the gift of each brother and build up a fraternity of love.
You have instituted the governing human authorities for the good of all, (Rom 13:1, 3)—instil in the leaders of our country the spirit to work for peace and common good of all the people entrusted to them, (LRul 7) especially the poor.
We praise you, Lord, through our sister bodily death, (CantSun 12) from whom you raised Christ our Lord (Act 13:30)—lead all those who have died in faith into the kingdom of heaven. (ER XXI 7)
Our Father...
Concluding Prayer
Loving Father, you have given us Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be our brother and Saviour, a perfect example
of fraternal love and communion. Help us to imbibe his Spirit that we may not lose him or turn our mind
and heart away from him, but overcome every obstacle and anxiety in life and thus strive as best we can to serve, love, honour, and adore him with clean hearts and pure minds. (cf. ER XXII. 25) We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Concluding Hymn[Tumult of Friars (C. Coelho)]
Be strengthened, my brothers, sing out in your mirth!
The Lord has his plans for this flock, it would seem.
A multitude coming from ends of the earth
I’ve seen in my dream, and I’ve heard in my dream.
Their voices are loud as they come and they go,
Their voices resound, they resound in my ears,
All tongues of the world in a Pentecost glow
Are thund’ring around me, my sons, it appears!
The roads of the world are now filled with their noise
The tramp and the football of thousands I heard,
The seekers and finders of heavenly joys,
They come with their laughter from far and from near.
The Frenchmen and Spaniards and Germans are here,
The English hasten. And now, what more,
The strangest of languages beat on my ear,
Rejoicing me, making my spirit to soar.
