COVID-19 Relief Work in St. Louis Friary, Palamaner

We friars Joy Valooran, Dominic C.J, Varghese Sebastian, Johnny Anthony and Jamesmon P.C. at St.Francis Friary, Kochi could start helping the people by making mask from 16th of March through a wide range of volunteers including our lay groups. Since complete lockdown, we reached cooked food packets to the most deserving living on streets and lone-elderly at homes, through an existing system of volunteers.

The Community members of St. Francis Friary in Kochin, realising the immediate need of usage of masks, launched into stitching them. We collected around 11 tailoring machines from homes and convents (to be returned later) and we also bought a cloth cutting machines, 3 tailoring machines and two layers of fabrics for masks. We were able to distribute more than 6,500 masks to Hospitals, Police department, Scavengers, Auto-drivers, Migrant workers, Fishermen, Patients and for the poor people. We also supplied more than 11,500 cut-pieces of mask materials to different groups for stitching in their own respective places. Now due to lockdown volunteers were unable to come to stitch the mask in our friary campus. Therefore, we are sending the stitching materials to their homes and get them stitched.

We distributed cooked food daily to the homeless living on streets & lone-elderly at homes, migrants, and beggars. In the coming days we want to reach people in need through providing provision kit. We are working towards this venture.

Despite of Government efforts, there are still hundreds of poor people struggling for their nourishment. Therefore, we realised the necessity of giving some basic raw food items (around 745 Kits) to the identified deserving people to sustain them for two weeks. After two weeks we have to give them another bundle of Kits. We are also providing reusable-masks to scavengers (500 masks) and families (1400 masks).
