Joy is Being Franciscan

28 Feb 2026

The celebration of the 800th Anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi (1226–2026) was observed with profound spiritual fervor at St. Sebastian’s Church, Chennai. This landmark event brought together the diverse branches of the Franciscan family to honor the enduring legacy of the "Poverello" of Assisi.

The centerpiece of the observance was the solemn Celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which was presided over by Br. Michael Anand. The spiritual depth of the liturgy was further enriched by Br. Pushparaj, who broke the Word of God, offering reflections that connected the historical charism of St. Francis to the contemporary mission of the Church.

The liturgy was a vibrant testimony of Franciscan identity, meticulously animated by the Friars of the Fraternities in Chennai, members of the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS), Franciscan Religious, and the dedicated parishioners of St. Sebastian’s. The sanctuary was transformed into a visual catechesis, featuring significant symbols of the order such as the San Damiano Cross, the Tau Cross, and a prominent banner commemorating the 800th Centenary. The presence of a St. Francis Relic and representations of the Stigmata served as powerful reminders of the Saint’s mystical configuration to Christ.

The atmosphere of the celebration reflected the Franciscan call to humility and peace, as evidenced by the symbolic placement of a brown habit at the foot of the altar and a floral tribute surrounding the statue of St. Francis. This gathering not only honored the passing of St. Francis eight centuries ago but also reaffirmed the commitment of the Franciscan family in Chennai to live out his gospel values of poverty, minority, and fraternity in the modern world. As the community processed through the aisles with candles and sacred symbols, the event stood as a testament to a living faith that continues to inspire generations.
