Reception of the Ministries of Lector and Acolyte, St. Anthony's Friary — 8 August 2026
At St. Anthony’s Friary, Bengaluru, a significant step was marked in the formation journey of the brothers preparing for the Franciscan priesthood, as they received the Ministries of Lector and Acolyte on 08 August 2026.
The celebration was an important moment in their journey towards priestly ordination. Through the conferral of these ministries, the brothers were entrusted with a deeper responsibility to serve the Church, particularly through the proclamation of the Word of God and service at the altar. These ministries are not merely ceremonial steps in formation but opportunities for the brothers to grow in prayer, responsibility, service and deeper participation in the liturgical life of the Church.
The Ministry of Lector calls the brothers to become attentive and faithful servants of the Word. As they proclaim the Scriptures during the liturgy, they are invited first to allow the Word of God to take root in their own lives. Their ministry therefore involves not only reading the Sacred Scriptures but also cultivating a life shaped by the Word, so that their proclamation may arise from personal faith, prayer and conviction.
The Ministry of Acolyte, on the other hand, draws the brothers more deeply into the service of the altar and the Eucharistic celebration. Through this ministry, they learn to serve with reverence, attentiveness and humility, developing a deeper appreciation for the Eucharist, which stands at the heart of Christian and consecrated life.
For the brothers, these ministries form part of the gradual journey towards priesthood. The years of formation are a time of prayer, study, community life, pastoral experience and service, through which they gradually discern and prepare themselves for the responsibilities of priestly ministry. The ministries of Lector and Acolyte provide them with valuable opportunities to learn through both practice and prayer, gradually developing the attitudes and dispositions required for future ministry.
Their journey towards priesthood is therefore not simply a preparation for receiving Holy Orders at a particular moment. It is a gradual process of conversion, commitment and growth. Every stage of formation calls them to deepen their relationship with Christ, strengthen their fraternity, develop a spirit of service and become increasingly available to God's people.
As Lectors and Acolytes, the brothers will continue to exercise these ministries throughout their years of formation. Their regular service at the liturgy will help them grow in confidence, reverence and responsibility, while their daily life in fraternity will provide the context in which these ministries are lived and integrated into their vocation.
